HP Kayak XW Series 04xx, IDE driver
HP Vectra VL 6/xxx Series 8, IDE driver
Hewlett Packard NT Drivers
HP certainly seems to be the company to turn to for driver updates for WinNT.  While these drivers are developed for HP's own systems, they work well with many motherboards using Intel chipsets.  The two most recent releases offer greater compatibility with NT, as well as support for new hardware.

Kayak (PIIXIDE 2.04.0)
This release, dated 06-29-98, offers support fot the Intel FX, HX, VX, TX, LX, BX, EX, and GX chipsets.  Updates and changes in this release include:

  •  Added support for CD-R and CD-RW device classes.

  •
  •  Added support for UDMA CD-ROM devices

  •
  •  Implemented a command parser for all ATA/ATAPI commands from ASPI, to

  • counteract a condition in which the data flow direction was indeterminate.

  •  Implemented a feature to flush hard disk drive write cache at system

  • shutdown, to prevent data loss in the case the hard disk drive experiences power loss before its write cache has been written to disk.

  •  Configure all ATAPI tape drives for their fastest possible PIO mode;

  • the Intel PIIX Bus Master IDE driver no longer configures this device
    class for DMA transfers.

  •  With the Windows NT4 crashdump feature enabled, in the case of a system

  • crash, the driver can now successfully write the dump log to the hard
    disk drive.

    Vectra (PIIXIDE 2.04.2a)
This release, dated 10-11-98, offers support fot the Intel FX, HX, VX, TX, LX, BX, EX, and GX chipsets.  Updates and changes in this release include:

  • No support for ATAPI DVD-RAM Drives.

  •
  • Ultra DMA is Disabled on the Secondary Channel since there

  • is no Ultra ATA cable.

  • ZIP drives works fine but don't forget to use the NT fix, and

  • DON'T INSTALL Service Pack 3 or 4 AFTER installing driver.
  • SMART is supported.

  •
  • HD Drives larger than 8.4GB are supported (LBA supported).

  •
  • CD-R and CD-RW devices are supported.

  •
  • DVD-ROM devices are supported.

  •
  • Contains an Entry Point for NTLOCK.

  •
  • Some other devices are also supported (like LS120).

  •
    Performance
Whether it is the fact that I am now running the Celeron / BH6 combination, or the fact that with this combination I am not over clocking the bus as I was with the AMD K6 / AX5, I do not see much of a difference in any of the drivers I have tested recently.  While the Business Disk and High End Disk results are substantially higher, WinBench Access times, Threadmark 2.0, and my "real world" file transfer times have all gone down in NT.

Driver performance differences on my system are so small that it is extremely unlikely that you would feel a difference between one driver and another.  I have been seeing more of a performance difference in seemingly identical fresh installations of NT than I do with changes in drivers.  This brings the choice down to compatability with each system's hardware.  I have been fairly fortunate that my choice of components are DMA / UDMA friendly.  I have not encountered any compatability problems with any of the NT drivers I have tested over the last few months.

    Testing
Windows NT was freshly installed to a FAT 16 formatted partition.  Aside from the benchmark programs, the only non-MS installed programs or drivers used were for the DCS sound card, the Matrox G200 video card, Hayes modem, and the D-Link ethernet card.  All tests were performed 3 times and the results were averaged.  Between each test the partition was defragmented and the system was rebooted.

    Timed File Transfer
The last test was to test the speed in transferring files between the two hard drives in a real-world application.  For this test, I transferred a 105 MB copy of Win95 cabs and other assorted files between two 1000 MB partitions.  The folder was moved from drive 0 to drive 1 and back again.  This process was repeated three times for each configuration with the results being averaged.
