Uninstalling
Intel Drivers *
Uninstalling the BMIDE / Abit's PIIX driver
is as easy as running the file, choosing uninstall, and following the prompts.
Does this take you back to where you were before you installed it in the
first place? In a word, no. As we have come to expect in uninstalling
most programs, there is usually something left behind. This is true
with the Intel driver.
First, yes the driver is removed; and if you check the DMA box in the device manager, which is returned during the uninstall / install process, the CPU utilization in WinBench98 improves substantially. In Threadmark 2.0, the increase in performance is not as great but is nonetheless there.
Starting with a clean installation of OSR2, my hard disk drive is recognized as Generic_Ide_Type_ 46 and is placed in the registry under Hkey_Local_Machine \ Enum \ ESDI. When the Intel driver is installed, the Generic Type 46 entry remains and a new entry is made. It is found in Hkey_Local_Machine \ Enum \ SCSI as a Quantum Fireball ST. No, it's not a SCSI HD, so why put it in a SCSI registry key, you ask? Hell-if-I-know. Actually, I have asked almost anyone who would listen this question. The general concensus and most credible answer seems to be, "It's easy for the programmers."
Removing the Intel driver does not remove the Fireball entry from SCSI, but it is disabled and I have deleted it with no ill effects. If you choose to leave the entry in, do so. I have seen no performance difference either way.
Changes that occur in the Device Manager are harder to document. From a clean installation of OSR2, the primary IDE controller is recognized as a "Primary IDE Controller (single fifo)." Installing the Intel driver changes this to a "Primary Bus Master IDE Controller." Removing the driver changes it again. This time, it's changed to a "Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)." The same holds true for the secondary IDE controller. The standard IDE/ESDI hard disk controller is changed to an "Intel 82371 AB Bus Master IDE Controller" with the driver installed and remains that way after the driver is uninstalled. I believe that this is due to the fact that Windows has now recognized a portion of the TX chipset's properties. Now, just when I was beginning to think that I had documented these changes and could put them to print, I ran the installation and uninstall one more time. This time the secondary IDE controller came up "single fifo" after the uninstall. This happened two more times in four attempts. I would swear that I changed nothing in my procedure, but who knows? The benchmarks also dropped 2 to 3% when this occurred.
For those of you, like me, who have to try every driver and patch that comes along, you will find that the benchmark results will degrade as you add and delete drivers and patches from OSR2. This seems to be a case of bits and pieces being left behind during the installation / uninstallation process. I have heard reports of people using Microsoft's REGCLEAN.EXE to put the registry back in order, but have not tried it myself. Another option is re-running Windows setup.
The bottom line for me is that I receive my best benchmarks with a clean installation of OSR2, setupex.exe, and remideup.exe. This is with or without the usbsupp.exe file. However, as far as WinBench98 results, just removing the Intel driver from an OSR2 installation with Intel driver and the PCI_TX patch runs a close second. This chart shows Winbench98 results between a clean installation of OSR2 + the setupex and remideup patches vs OSR2 + bmide driver and pci_tx patch with the Intel driver removed.

The text files below are the changes that
were noted by ConfigSafe upon installing the (1) Intel driver to
a clean installation of OSR2 and (2) uninstalling the Intel driver.
Dry reading at best, but I have found the documentation valuable when editing
the registry to remove all traces of the Intel drivers when a reinstallation
of OSR2 was not practical.
